So today the time for which one stares at the screen whether it is computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, etc has increased significantly. The sudden increase in screen time especially after 2020 and also increasing digitalization has led to your eyes being impacted negatively. Here are some of the pains your eyes are going through with the shoot-up in your screen time:
1) Having dry eyes?
With winter approaching and also with you spending more and more time on the screen, the dryness in your eyes would only be natural. The tear film loss from your eyes irritates the eyes, leads to reddening of eyes, and could even cause damage to the surface of the eye.
2) What is Computer Vision Syndrome?
Long-term computer screen staring for hours at a time causes eye strain. Working at a computer requires your eyes to focus and refocus all the time as you go through things again and again. This also lessens the number of times we blink causing the eyes to dry out and blurring the vision periodically whilst working.
3) Are you having double vision (diplopia)?
Double vision is seeing two images of the same object. It could occur because of the continuous back-and-forth movement of the eyes or because of dryness.
4) Are your eyes tiring out?
Continuous staring at the screen leads to eye fatigue, also known as asthenopia. It leads to eye discomfort, pain in the eyes, burning or itchy eyes, etc.
5) Having headaches behind the eyes?
In studies, it has been found that migraine episodes and screen headaches are associated with increased levels of screen time. It is an outcome of eyestrain.
6) Having trouble seeing far-off objects?
It means you could have Myopia or nearsightedness. With an increase in screen time, exposure to natural sunlight has reduced significantly because one steps outdoors less. In a study, it has been found that sunlight is critical to developing eyes as it maintains the correct distance between the lens and the retina, keeping the vision in focus. Not getting sunlight results in dopamine deficiency causing the eyes to become more elongated, and causing myopia. (Getting sunlight is recommended but at the same time protecting the eyes from too much exposure to UV rays).
7) What is the focus flexibility issue in children?
Though it is temporary when children focus too long on close-up screens their eyes take time to adjust back to distance vision. It is a short-term issue and the eyes eventually adjust back to their normal flexibility.
