What is Retina?

The retina is located is present at the back of the eye. The function of the retina is like a camera i.e. to receive light & convert it into neural signals and send these signals to the brain for recognition of the message. A damaged retina can lead to a lot of eye issues and one must rush to the best retina specialist to get it checked.

What are the common retinal disorders?

Here are a few common retinal disorders:
Retinal tear – This condition occurs because there is shrinkage of the vitreous layer which peels away from the thin layer present at the back of the eye. This causes a tear or serious damage to the retina.
Retinal detachment – Retinal detachment is an alarming situation in which the retina drifts away from the actual position because the vitreous gel passes through the retinal tear. If the problem is not treated on time it may cause permanent vision loss.
Diabetic retinopathy – If people suffering from diabetes face this issue as the blood capillaries in the backside of your eye leak fluid into the retina. This leads to the swelling of the retina, which may cause blurry or distorted vision
Epiretinal membrane – It is a delicate fibro cellular tissue-like membrane that is placed on top of the retina which distorts your vision. It may happen because of a retinal tear & is common in people above 50 years of age.
Macular hole – A macular hole is a breakage in the macula responsible for sharp vision and is located at the center of the retina. The breakage can happen because of the abnormal traction between the retina and the vitreous or any injury in the eye.
Macular degeneration – This happens because of the defect of the macula
leading to loss of clear vision. There are two types — wet macular degeneration
and dry macular degeneration. Firstly people suffer from dry form and then
progress to the wet form.
Retinitis pigmentosa – Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic disorder that leads to loss of cells in the retina, thus causing loss of peripheral vision & difficulty in identifying objects at night.
